摘要Abstract: The streets of Cannes are crowded with tourists, photographers, filmmakers and movie stars as the prestigious Cannes Film Festival begins red carpet’s out on the French Riviera.
Poor timing, though it’s now considered one of the world’s top film events, the festival had a fascinating false start in 1939. Meant to rival Italy’s Venice Film Festival, which was controlled by Mussolini and Hitler at the time, France decided to coordinate their own event. All just in time for Germany to invade Poland, England and France declared war on the Nazis two days later, and the Cannes Film Festival wouldn’t truly manifest until 1946.
To reinforce the infant festival, a total of nine films were given the festival’s top award in 1946, but competition is much stiffer today. Unfortunately, failures are given abundant attention as the festival is notorious for its boos. It’s not all serious, though- every year the Palm Dog is given to the best puppy performance in a film. The festival sets out to fulfill several goals, one being to keep international collaboration alive.
